Academic integrity with AI means the student is still the author of the work they turn in. A hint can be allowed. A pasted essay usually is not. The school's rule matters more than a general debate. If you can see the prompt, you can tell which one happened.

What is academic integrity with AI?
Integrity is the agreement that the work represents the student's understanding. AI and academic integrity covers knowing which kinds of AI help a teacher or school allows, such as brainstorming, explaining a concept, or checking grammar, and which count as cheating, such as turning in AI-written work as your own.
It also means being open about when and how AI was used and making sure the ideas, reasoning, and learning in the work are genuinely your own. The goal is to use AI as a tool that supports critical thinking, not one that replaces it.
Why academic integrity with AI matters
Students are stuck between a tool that will write the paper and a teacher who has not said whether that is allowed. Ambiguity pushes them toward secrecy. A one sentence rule, repeated on the assignment, prevents more cheating than a surprise accusation.
Parents need the same sentence at home. Homework help that teaches the step matches most teachers' idea of a tutor. Homework help that returns a finished lab report does not. Look at the chat once so you know which product you have.

Is using AI for homework cheating?
It depends on the assignment. Asking for a step you then do yourself is closer to a tutor. Submitting the tool's paragraph as your own is the shortcut most teachers mean by cheating. Ask the teacher, and read the chat so you know which one happened.
Should teachers use AI detectors?

What rule can a family copy?
Help can explain a step. The student writes the final sentence away from the chat and can teach the step back. If they cannot explain it, it is not finished. Match this to the teacher's rule when they differ.
Does citing AI make any use honest?
Citing AI makes the use visible. It does not make every use allowed. Some assignments forbid it even with a citation. Read the assignment. A citation plus a pasted essay can still miss the learning the grade is for.
