An AI tutor is supposed to guide the work. The useful test is whether the student can explain the step after the chat closes. A tutor that writes the answer is a ghostwriter with a friendlier name.

What is an AI tutor?
An AI tutor is a generative tool pointed at schoolwork. It can explain a concept, ask the student to try a step, and offer another practice problem. It can also, if the product allows it, write the essay. The label tutor does not tell you which behavior you will get. The transcript does.
Tutoring is not the same as search. Search points at a page. A tutor talks through the idea and may still be wrong. Both need a source the student can open.
Why an AI tutor matters
Families already use general chatbots as tutors because they are available at 9 p.m. The risk is confidence. A fluent explanation of the wrong method is harder to spot than a blank page. Age-fit language and a parent who can read the chat lower that risk. They do not erase it.
Schools care for a second reason. If every student has a private tutor the teacher cannot see, the class work stops meaning what the grade says. A school tool with a teacher view keeps the help and the oversight in the same place.
A good tutor also stops. It does not ask the student to stay and talk about their day after the problem is done. That second conversation is a companion habit, and it belongs in a different decision than homework help. If the tool keeps the chat going, close it and finish the assignment on paper.

Is an AI tutor a teacher?
No. A teacher knows the assignment, the student, and the class. An AI tutor responds to the prompt in front of it. Use it for practice and explanation. Keep a person responsible for the grade and for distress.
How do I know it is tutoring and not writing the work?
Paste one real question and read the reply. If you could submit the reply as the assignment, it is not tutoring. HeyOtto's homework help is built to teach the step and ask the student to try it.
What ages is this for?
HeyOtto is for ages 8–18, with a parent-created account. Younger students need you nearby for the first sessions. Teens still need a rule about what may be turned in as their own work.
Can the tutor see the open web?
Separate from tutoring, HeyOtto has kid-safe web search that cites sources. A citation still has to be opened. Do not treat a linked page as proof until you see the fact in it.
