Responsible AI
Building and using AI so that it is safe, fair, transparent, private, and accountable to the people it affects, including children.

- Educators and school leaders

What parents should know
Responsible AI is the habit of building and buying AI that people can question. Safety, fairness, a clear account of what the system is, privacy, and someone who answers when it goes wrong. For children, add an adult who can see the use. NIST's risk framework is a common reference, not a seal.

What is responsible AI?
The words show up in procurement and in policy because they are a bundle. Safe means the foreseeable harms were considered. Fair means the team looked for biased results. Transparent means a person can tell they are talking with software. Private means data is limited and not quietly sold. Accountable means a named organization fixes problems.
None of those words is a certification by itself. A slide that says responsible AI without saying who reads the chat is unfinished. HeyOtto's concrete version is on the product: parent-created accounts for ages 8–18, readable chats, no ads, and chats that are not sold or used to train models.
Why responsible AI matters
Schools and companies are asked to adopt AI quickly. The bundle is how you slow the decision down by one meeting. What is the system for, who is harmed if it is wrong, and what can a parent or a teacher see?
Children are a special case inside the bundle because they cannot meaningfully accept a terms-of-service novel. An adult has to be in the account.
How it shows up in practice
- A buyer asks for the data flow before the pilot.
- A disclosure on screen says the reply is from software.
- A biased pattern in school recommendations is written down and revisited.
- A distress path names 988 and names the adult who is alerted.
How HeyOtto helps
Responsible AI means safety, privacy, and accountability are checkable. HeyOtto does not claim a certification under NIST, COPPA, or FERPA. Parents can read chats and set topic limits. There are no ads. Chats are not sold and are not used to train other models. A school can request a demo to see teacher and advisor views.
- Parents can read the chats.
- Topic limits and tool permissions are per child.
- Under 13, verifiable parental consent is part of setup.

Is responsible AI a standard you can be certified to?
Not as one global certificate. NIST offers a framework. Laws such as COPPA add duties for children's data. A vendor that says certified should show the body that certified it. HeyOtto does not make that claim here.
Does transparency mean publishing the model?
Usually it means people know they are using AI and can understand the limits. Publishing weights is a different decision.
What does HeyOtto put on the table?
A parent-created account, readable chats, topic limits, no ads, and no use of chats to train models. Distress alerts do not call emergency services automatically.
