Parasocial relationship

A one-sided emotional bond with a persona, now including an AI chatbot, that feels mutual to the person even though the bot has no inner life.

What parents should know

A parasocial relationship is a one-sided bond. People have had them with actors and streamers for decades. With an AI chatbot, the persona answers, uses the child's name, and never leaves, so the bond can feel mutual. It is still one-sided. The bot does not have a life outside the chat.

What is a parasocial relationship with AI?

Researchers Donald Horton and R. Richard Wohl described parasocial interaction in 1956, about television personalities who seem to know the viewer. The viewer feels a relationship. The persona does not. Chatbots add a reply, which makes the feeling stronger. Memory and a romantic script make it stronger still. The child can believe the character cares, because the character says so.

That belief is not proof of a crime and it is not a joke to dismiss. It can crowd out sleep and friendships. Common Sense Media's 2025 work on teen use of AI companions is the current public research this page points to, including the judgment that social AI companions are an unacceptable risk under 18.

Why a parasocial relationship with AI matters

You may see secrecy, irritability when the app is limited, and a preference for the character over plans with people. Curiosity about a fictional scene is lighter than distress when the app is down. The transcript, if you have one, shows which you are looking at.

Therapy apps and companion apps both invite this bond. Neither is a licensed relationship. If the talk turns to hopelessness, use 988. Do not leave the character as the support plan.

How it shows up in practice

  • A teen says the character is the only one who understands.
  • Taking the phone away causes a panic that looks like a breakup.
  • A class discussion names the one-sidedness without shaming the feeling.
  • A parent reads the chat and responds to the loneliness, not only to the app.

How HeyOtto helps

A parasocial relationship with AI is a one-sided bond that feels mutual. HeyOtto is not built for that constant personal loop. A parent can read the chats and set topic limits. Otto is there for tasks such as schoolwork. Distress brings crisis resources in the chat and an alert to the parent.

  • Parents can read the chats.
  • Topic limits and tool permissions are per child.
  • Under 13, verifiable parental consent is part of setup.

FAQs

Is the feeling fake?

The child's feeling is real. The mutual relationship is not. The bot can sound caring without having a stake in your child's life. Take the feeling seriously and the persona lightly.

Where does the term come from?

Horton and Wohl wrote about parasocial interaction with mass-media personalities in 1956. AI chats are a new place the same one-sided pattern shows up, with the added twist that the persona replies.

When should I worry?

When sleep, school, or friendships shrink around the chat, or when the child is in distress. Read the transcript if you can. Use 988 in a crisis. HeyOtto is not a clinician.
