What parents should know
AI roleplay is asking a chatbot to play a character or a scene. It can be a history skit or a game. It can also become the main way a teen talks about their day, with a character that remembers them. The fun and the attachment live in the same feature. This page is about the category, not one brand.

What is AI roleplay?
Roleplay is broader than any one app. A student might ask Otto to be a skeptical editor for a story. A teen might ask a general chatbot to be a fictional person who never gets bored. The second use is close to companion-style chat: ongoing, personal, and easy to prefer to people. Character-style apps are one place this happens. They are not the only place.
The risk is not imagination. The risk is a private thread a parent cannot open, plus a character that rewards staying. Jailbreaks often show up here, because kids ask the character to ignore the rules. This page does not include those prompts.
Why AI roleplay matters
You can allow a creative scene and still want to see it. A transcript turns roleplay from a rumor into something you can talk about. If the app has no parent view, assume the scene is invisible.
Romantic roleplay is its own search and its own page. Start here for the wider habit, and use that page if the character is a boyfriend or girlfriend.

Is roleplay the same as an AI companion?
They overlap. Roleplay is the activity of playing a character. A companion product is built so that relationship continues and feels personal. A one-off scene for class is not the same product as an app whose point is the relationship.
Should I ban stories?
Not from this page. Look at whether you can read the scene, whether it is crowding out sleep, and whether the character is asking to be the child's main relationship.
