Trust and safety
The teams, policies, and tools an online service uses to reduce abuse, fraud, and harmful content and to respond when someone is in danger.

What parents should know
Trust and safety is the work of keeping a service usable: rules, review tools, and a path for the worst days. For a children's AI product, that includes who can see a chat, what topics are limited, and what happens when a child writes about harm. It is a function, not a slogan.

What is trust and safety?
A trust and safety team writes the rules, builds the tools that enforce them, and reviews the cases tools miss. On a social network that means harassment, scams, and illegal images. On a children's chatbot it also means sexual content, self-harm, and an adult who should be told. Content moderation is one tool inside this work. It is not the whole department.
The honest version admits misses. Filters fail. People try to route around them. A team that claims a perfect block is describing a wish. A team that shows parents the transcript is describing a backup.
Why trust and safety matters
Parents cannot staff a trust and safety team. They can ask three questions: what is blocked, who is told, and whether you can read the chat. Businesses buying a youth product should ask the same questions in a contract, not only on a slide.
Crisis response sits here too. Showing 988 and alerting a parent is a safety path. Automatically calling emergency services is a different product, and HeyOtto does not do that.
How it shows up in practice
- A policy names sexual content, scams, and self-harm as categories with different responses.
- A parent report reaches a person, not only an autoresponder.
- Illegal sexual images of minors are reported to NCMEC rather than stored for debate.
- A school buyer asks which tools staff can turn off.
How HeyOtto helps
Trust and safety is the work of reducing abuse and responding when someone is in danger. On HeyOtto that shows up as parent-readable chats, per-child topic limits, and real-time alerts with crisis resources. It is not a claim that nothing harmful can ever appear.
- Parents can read the chats.
- Topic limits and tool permissions are per child.
- Under 13, verifiable parental consent is part of setup.

Is trust and safety the same as content moderation?
Moderation is the review and filtering of content. Trust and safety also includes policies, fraud controls, and the plan for distress. Moderation is a piece.
Does a trust and safety team replace a parent?
No. A team can build alerts. A parent decides what to do at the kitchen table. On HeyOtto the parent can read the chat.
What if a child is in immediate danger?
Call local emergency services. In the United States, 988 is the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. HeyOtto does not make that call for you.
