Values-aligned AI

AI that a school can steer so replies follow that school's stated mission, instead of one default voice for every campus.

What parents should know

Values-aligned AI means the product can be set to reflect a community's stated mission, not only a vendor's default. On HeyOtto, the control this page will describe is the school account: admins personalize Otto for their environment and choose which student tools are on. This page does not describe a separate consumer faith mode.

What is values-aligned AI?

Values-aligned AI is a setup question. Whose rules shape the reply: a family's, a school's, or a faith community's, or a single factory default? The phrase covers mission statements, topic boundaries, and the tone adults want students to hear. It is not a promise that the model shares anyone's beliefs. It is a promise that adults can point the product at the boundaries they wrote down.

Schools ask this when a chatbot will sit next to a handbook. A public district, a charter, and a parish school will not want the same aside about a holiday or a contested topic. Alignment here means the institution can say what is in bounds. It does not mean the model has been certified to a creed.

Why values-aligned AI matters

A default voice feels neutral until it isn't. Families notice when a tool argues with the way they talk about faith, money, or conflict. Schools notice when a tool ignores the student handbook. The useful question is who can change the boundaries, and whether that change is per student or one switch for a whole campus.

Overclaiming is the failure mode. A marketing line about faith is not the same as a control a parent can find. This glossary describes the school personalization HeyOtto publishes: admins personalize Otto for their environment and decide which tools students can use.

How it shows up in practice

  • A school admin turns image generation or search off for a class.
  • A handbook topic is set as out of bounds for student chat.
  • Two campuses in one network do not have to share one configuration.
  • A family account still uses per-child topic limits. That boundary is separate from school personalization.

How HeyOtto helps

Values-aligned AI on HeyOtto is the school account. Admins can personalize Otto for their environment and decide which student tools are on, including image generation and search. That is the control this page describes. This page does not describe a consumer faith mode.

  • School admins choose which student tools are on.
  • Personalization is for the school environment, not a claimed faith certification.
  • Request a demo to see which fields the school screen changes.

FAQs

Can HeyOtto match a faith community's beliefs?

This page does not claim a consumer faith mode. School accounts can be personalized for that school's environment, and student tools can be turned on or off. Ask in a demo what that screen actually changes.

Is values alignment the same as a content filter?

A filter blocks categories. Alignment is the institution's own boundaries and mission, which may include filters and may also include tone and which tools exist. They overlap. They are not the same switch.

Who sets it?

On HeyOtto for Schools, admins do. On a family account, a parent sets topic limits per child. Kids do not self-enroll.
