What parents should know
AI-assisted cheating is submitting machine-written work as if the student did it. The fix is a clear rule and a tool that stops at a hint. A detector score is a weak proof. The session, and the student's explanation, are stronger.

What is AI-assisted cheating?
Cheating with AI is an integrity problem, not a new kind of software. The student presents generated text, code, or a solution as their own work when the assignment did not allow that. Getting a hint and then solving the problem is a different use. The school's rule has to draw the line.
Detectors that guess whether a paragraph was machine-written are easy to over-trust. They miss some AI text and they flag human writing. A teacher who can see the session, and a student who can explain the step, are more concrete than a percentage.
Why AI-assisted cheating matters
A tool that returns a paste-ready answer makes the violation easy. A tool that asks the student to try the step makes the allowed use the default. Product design is part of academic integrity.
Punishing from a detector alone creates false accusations. Say in the AUP what is allowed, and look at the work and the session before you decide.

Does HeyOtto catch cheating?
HeyOtto does not offer an AI-writing detector. Teachers can see sessions on a school account. The student still has to be able to explain the work.
Is using homework help cheating?
Not by itself. HeyOtto homework help teaches the step and asks the student to try it. Your teacher's rule decides what may be turned in. If the rule says no AI at all, follow the rule.
What should a parent look for?
Open the transcript. If it is a finished essay and your child cannot restate it, talk about the assignment. If it is a hint and their own last line, that is the intended use.
