What parents should know
AI monitoring can mean a parent reads the chat they already own, or it can mean spyware on a device. Those are different. On HeyOtto, monitoring is the parent dashboard and alerts for that child's HeyOtto chats, not a scan of every other app.

What is AI monitoring?
Monitoring is an adult looking at use. In a family AI product, that can be a transcript, topic limits, and an alert when a message looks like distress. The child should know the parent can read the chat. Hidden surveillance of a phone is a different product category.
Schools monitor too, in a narrower way. A teacher or advisor may see a school session. That view is about the school account. It is not a promise that the school can see a child's private accounts on other services.
Why AI monitoring matters
Alerts fail if nobody knows they exist. A dashboard fails if it is never opened. Monitoring that only sells fear, without a transcript you can actually read, is not a control. Ask what you will see, and what the product will not watch.
Distress alerts are not a 911 call. They tell a parent. The parent decides what to do. A product should say that limit out loud.
How it shows up in practice
- A parent opens a transcript after an alert, not only when they are curious.
- A child is told, at setup, that chats are readable.
- A school session is visible to the teacher. A different app on the phone is not.

Does HeyOtto read my child's other apps?
No. A parent can read HeyOtto chats. This page does not describe device-wide spyware or monitoring of other companies' apps.
Should I tell my child I can read the chats?
Yes. Say it when you set the account up. A stated rule is easier to live with than a dashboard you open in secret.
Is an alert the same as calling emergency services?
No. HeyOtto alerts the parent and can show crisis resources. It does not auto-contact emergency services. If someone is in immediate danger, you make that call.
