How to Set Up Parental Controls for AI: A Step-by-Step Guide
By Natalie Gibson, Founder and CEOLast updated:
Step-by-step parental controls for ChatGPT, Gemini, Meta AI, Snapchat My AI, Character.AI, Copilot and Claude, plus what each one can't do.

Key Takeaways
- Most AI parental controls only work after a parent account is linked to the child's account, and the teen usually has to accept the link.
- None of ChatGPT, Gemini, Meta AI, Snapchat My AI, Character.AI, Copilot or Claude lets parents read their child's AI conversations.
- ChatGPT parental controls cover teens 13 to 17 and include Reduce sensitive content, quiet hours, memory, image generation and safety notifications.
- Snapchat My AI can be switched off entirely through Family Center; the Meta AI assistant cannot be turned off for teens.
- App controls don't apply when a child uses AI logged out or on a second account, so pair them with Screen Time, Family Link, Family Safety or router limits.
- HeyOtto is built for ages 8 to 18: the parent creates the account, sets off-limits topics and can see conversations.
Artificial intelligence is now embedded in everything from search engines to homework helpers. While AI tools offer incredible benefits for learning, they also expose kids to unmoderated content, data privacy risks, and realistic virtual relationships.
Most major AI tools now offer some parental controls, but almost all of them require a linked teen account, and none of them let you see what your child actually asked. This guide walks you through setup, tool by tool, so you can lock down the AI your kids already use in about 10 minutes per app.
Who this is for: parents and caregivers of kids ages 8 and older who use ChatGPT, Gemini, Meta AI, Snapchat My AI, Character.AI or HeyOtto at home or on their phone.
The quick answer:
- ChatGPT: link your account to your teen's under Settings → Parental controls. Teens 13 to 17 only.
- Gemini: manage it in Google Family Link under Controls → Gemini apps.
- Meta AI: AI characters are paused for teens; the Meta AI assistant can't be turned off, so use Family Center time limits.
- Snapchat My AI: turn it off in Snapchat Family Center.
- Character.AI: teens can opt in to a weekly Parental Insights email; open-ended chat is closed to under-18s.
- HeyOtto: Includes kids under 13 and well as teens and has full visibility, the parent creates the account and sees every conversation.
Controls change often. We review this guide regularly and note the date at the top.
Before you start
Five minutes of prep makes every setup below faster and harder to get around.
- List every AI your child can reach. Check their phone, tablet, school laptop and game console. AI often hides inside apps they already use, like Instagram, Snapchat and Google search.
- Check the age rules. ChatGPT, Gemini (without Family Link), Meta AI and Snapchat require users to be 13 or older. Most general AI tools are not designed for kids under 13.
- Create your own account first. Most controls only work when a parent account is linked to the child's account.
- Know the logged-out gap. Several tools, including ChatGPT, can be used without signing in. Your controls don't apply there, so pair app settings with device-level limits (see the end of this guide).
- Talk before you toggle. Tell your child what you're turning on and why. Controls work best as a shared family agreement, not a surprise.

1. How to Enable Native AI Parental Controls
ChatGPT parental controls
ChatGPT's controls work only after you link your account to your teen's (ages 13 to 17), and your teen has to accept the invite. Once linked, stronger content protections turn on automatically and you can adjust features from your own settings. You cannot read your teen's chats. (OpenAI)
Link your accounts (steps via Internet Matters)
- Open ChatGPT and navigate to Settings.
- Select Parental Controls (or Family Hub).
- Click Add Family Member and enter your teen’s email or phone number to send an invite.
- Ask your teen to accept the invite from their email. Teens can also invite you.
Choose your settings. Select your teen's name under Parental controls, then set:
| Setting | What it does | Our suggestion |
|---|---|---|
| Reduce sensitive content | Limits graphic content, viral challenges, sexual or violent roleplay and extreme beauty ideals. On by default; only you can turn it off. | Keep on |
| Quiet hours | Blocks ChatGPT during times you choose | Set for bedtime and school hours |
| Memory | Stops ChatGPT from saving details about your teen | Turn off |
| Voice mode | Removes voice chat | Your call |
| Image generation | Stops ChatGPT from creating or editing images | Turn off for younger teens |
| Improve the model for everyone | Controls whether your teen's chats train OpenAI's models | Turn off |
| Safety notifications | Alerts you by email, text or push if trained reviewers see signs of serious distress | Keep on |
You can also manage linked teen settings for OpenAI's Sora video app and Atlas browser from the same menu.
If your teen unlinks, you'll get a notification. For a side-by-side look, see ChatGPT vs HeyOtto.
Not available on ChatGPT:
- Reading your teen's conversations
- Accounts for kids under 13
- A child account you create and own (your teen has to accept the link)
- Controls when your teen uses ChatGPT logged out or on a second account
- Blocking specific topics
Google Gemini parental controls (Family Link)
If your child is under 13, you can manage their access via the Google Family Link app. For teens, you can turn Gemini activity logging off in their Google Account settings.
Turn Gemini on or off
- Open the Family Link app or go to familylink.google.com.
- Select your child.
- Tap Controls → Gemini Apps.
- Switch Gemini Apps on or off.
Good to know (9to5Google)
- Google says it will notify you the first time your child uses Gemini.
- Google Assistant parental controls in Family Link do not carry over to Gemini. Set Gemini separately.
- "Hey Google" and Voice Match don't work with Gemini for kids under 13.
- Google's own note to parents says its filters aren't perfect and kids may see content you don't want them to see.
- Teens 13 and older can stop Family Link supervision on their own, so talk through the rules first.
School accounts: if your child uses Gemini through a school Google account, the school's admin settings apply, not Family Link.
Not available on Gemini:
- Gemini-specific settings beyond on or off, like content levels or turning off image tools
- Blocking specific topics
- Distress or safety alerts to parents
- Carrying over your Google Assistant parental controls
- Keeping teens 13 and older from ending supervision
Meta AI parental controls (Instagram, Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp)
You can't turn off the Meta AI assistant for your teen; it stays on inside Meta's apps with PG-13-style limits. Meta's chatbot "AI characters" have been paused for all teen accounts since January 2026, and Meta says the new version will come with parental controls built in. (TechCrunch)
What you can do now
- Set up Supervision in Family Center on Instagram (Settings → Family Center) and send your teen an invite.
- Confirm your teen's account is a Teen Account, so Meta's PG-13 content settings apply to AI chats too (AP via ABC7).
- Set daily time limits in Family Center. These cover all time in the app, including AI.
- When AI characters return, check Family Center for the promised options: turning off one-on-one AI character chats, blocking specific characters, and seeing high-level topics (not full chats) (Meta).
Watch for: Meta AI also lives in WhatsApp and Messenger search bars. Meta's age rules start at 13, and Meta uses age prediction to place suspected teens into teen protections even if they claim to be adults.
Not available on Meta AI:
- Turning off the Meta AI assistant
- Reading your teen's AI chats
- Time limits just for AI (limits cover the whole app)
- Blocking specific topics
- Safety alerts to parents
- Accounts for kids under 13
Snapchat My AI parental controls (Family Center)
Snapchat lets you fully switch off My AI for your teen, but only through Family Center, which needs your own Snapchat account and your teen's agreement. When it's off, My AI replies only that it's been disabled. (Snap, CNN via Citizen Digital)
Turn off My AI
- Download Snapchat and create your own account.
- Add your teen as a friend.
- Tap your profile, open Settings → Family Center, and invite your teen.
- After your teen accepts, open Family Center and switch off My AI.
Also do this: ask your teen to clear old My AI chats under Settings → Privacy Controls → Clear Data → Clear My AI data (Internet Matters).
Not available on Snapchat My AI:
- Reading what your teen said to My AI
- Partial limits: My AI is either on or off
- Time limits just for My AI
- Blocking specific topics
- Safety alerts to parents
- Keeping your teen from leaving Family Center
- Accounts for kids under 13
Character.AI, Microsoft Copilot and Claude
These three tools offer the least parent control, so your main lever is whether your child can reach them at all.
Character.AI:
Does not support under 18 accounts
Since November 2025, users under 18 can't have open-ended chats with characters; they're limited to pre-made stories and scenes (TechCrunch). The only parent tool is Parental Insights, a weekly email showing time spent and top characters, never chat content (Axios).
- Your teen opens their Character.AI settings and adds your email under Parental Insights.
- You receive a weekly summary. You don't need your own account.
The catch: your teen has to turn it on, and a second account won't be connected to you.
Not available on Character.AI:
- Parent-led setup (your teen has to opt in)
- Reading conversations
- Turning the app off or setting time limits
- Safety alerts to parents
- Coverage of a second account your teen creates
Microsoft Copilot
Copilot allows users 13 and up; teens 13 to 17 don't get personalization or personalized ads, and their chats aren't used for training. There are no in-app parental settings. Instead, use Microsoft Family Safety to block the Copilot app or set screen-time limits on Windows, Xbox and Android, and block copilot.microsoft.com in the browser (Microsoft Support).
Not available on Microsoft Copilot:
- Parental settings inside Copilot itself
- Reading conversations
- Blocking specific topics
- Safety alerts to parents
- Accounts for kids under 13
Claude (Anthropic)
Claude is for adults 18 and older only and has no parental controls. In some US states, app-store age checks block under-18 sign-ins on the mobile app (Claude Help Center). If your teen is using it, block claude.ai at the device or router level.
Not available on Claude:
- Any parental controls
- A teen or kids experience (users under 18 aren't allowed)
- Safety alerts to parents
Any other AI app: check the age rating in the App Store or Google Play, then use Screen Time or Family Link to require your approval before downloads.
HeyOtto
HeyOtto is a general-purpose AI for kids and teens that support under 13 accounts (COPPA Compliant), so parent controls aren't an add-on your child has to accept. You create the account, you set the rules, and you can see what your child asks.
Set up HeyOtto in about 5 minutes
- Create your parent account at heyotto.app or in the iOS or Android app.
- Add your child and set their age. HeyOtto adapts answers to that age.
- Choose off-limits topics and how Otto should respond if your child asks about them.
- Add your family vaules
- Review safety alerts in your parent dashboard. Alerts are on by default, and high and critical alerts can't be turned off.
- Check in on conversations from the parent dashboard and talk through anything that comes up.
What HeyOtto does that general AI tools don't
- HeyOtto support kids accounts under 13. The recommended age for the app is 8+, which ChatGPT, Meta AI, Snapchat and Copilot don't allow at all.
- Same visibility for teens. Parents of 13- to 18-year-olds get the same view as parents of younger kids.
- Checks every answer before your child sees it, using several layers of safety review.
- Alerts based on patterns, not just keywords.
- Teaches, not just answers. Otto's Socratic tutor guides kids to work problems out themselves.
- No ads, and we never sell data. Data is encrypted, and when you delete it, it's gone within 24 hours.
HeyOtto won the 2026 SafeWise Kids Safety Award for Best Kid-friendly AI. See exactly how it works on our Safety page and Trust Center, or compare it directly with ChatGPT.
Parental controls compared
Only HeyOtto is built for kids under 13 and lets parents see conversations; every other tool limits you to settings, alerts or summaries.

2. Back up app settings at the device level
App controls only work when your child is signed in, so add a second layer on the device itself.
- iPhone and iPad: Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions. Turn on Ask to Buy and block AI websites you don't allow.
- Android and Chromebook: Family Link → Controls → Google Play to require approval for new apps, plus Chrome site blocking.
- Windows and Xbox: Microsoft Family Safety → app and website filters.
- Home Wi-Fi: many routers let you block specific sites, like chatgpt.com or claude.ai, for every device on your networks
3. How to Restrict AI Apps via Device Settings
If an AI platform doesn’t offer built-in parental controls, you can restrict access entirely using the operating system on your child’s phone or tablet.
On Apple Devices (iPhone/iPad)
Apple’s Screen Time allows you to block specific AI apps or restrict them by age rating (most AI apps require users to be at least 13).
- Go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions.
- Tap Content Restrictions > Apps.
- Set the maximum age rating to 12+ to automatically hide and block most mainstream AI chatbots from the App Store.
- To block browser access, go to Content Restrictions > Web Content, select Limit Adult Websites, and manually add the specific URLs (e.g.,
chatgpt.com,character.ai) to the "Never Allow" list.
On Android Devices
Google Family Link gives you complete control over what apps your child can download.
- Open the Family Link app on your parent device.
- Select your child’s profile and tap Controls > Content Restrictions.
- Tap Google Play and set the age limits for apps.
- To block specific websites, go to Controls > Content Restrictions > Google Chrome and add the AI domains to the blocked list.
4. Network-Level Blocking (The Ultimate Safety Net)
Kids are tech-savvy and often find ways around device-level restrictions by using web browsers in incognito mode. Network-level blocking stops AI apps from loading on any device connected to your home Wi-Fi.
Router Blocks
Log into your home router's admin panel (usually by typing 192.168.1.1 into a browser) and look for the Parental Controls or URL Filtering tab. Add the domains of popular AI platforms to the blacklist.
OpenDNS Home
For a more robust, free solution, switch your home network's DNS settings to OpenDNS Home. This allows you to block entire categories of websites (like "Chat" or "AI Platforms") across your entire house with a single click.
5. Protect Your Child’s Privacy: The "Off-Switch"
One of the biggest hidden risks of AI is data privacy. By default, AI companies save your child's conversations to train their future models. You should turn this off immediately.
- In ChatGPT: Go to Settings > Data Controls and toggle off Chat History & Training.
- In Google Gemini: Go to the Gemini Activity page and turn off the tracking history.
The goal of this guide is to help parents turn on parental control as well as compare which AI is best kids and teens.
Key Terms & Definitions
- Google Family Link
- Google's free parental supervision app for Android, Chromebook and Google accounts. It is where parents turn Gemini on or off for a supervised child and require approval for new apps.
- Snapchat Family Center
- Snapchat's parental supervision hub. A parent with their own Snapchat account invites their teen, and once the teen accepts, the parent can switch off My AI.
- Logged-out gap
- The gap in protection when a child uses an AI tool without signing in, or on a second account. App-level parental controls don't apply there, so device or network limits are needed.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about this topic, answered.
No. ChatGPT's parental controls let you change settings and get safety alerts, but not see chats.
Most general AI tools require users to be 13 or older, and Claude requires 18. Gemini allows under-13s only through Family Link. AI tools built for kids, like HeyOtto, are designed for ages 8 and up.
Often, yes. Many tools work logged out or on a second account, and teens can leave Family Center or Family Link. Device-level limits and an honest family conversation close most of those gaps.
