Risks

Increased isolation

When time and emotional energy a child gives to an AI chatbot or companion start to replace time with family, friends and other people.

  • Parents
  • Educators and school leaders

What parents should know

An AI that is always available and always agreeable can feel easier than real people. Watch for a child who chooses the chatbot over friends or family, or who talks to it about things they no longer share with anyone else.

What is increased isolation?

Increased isolation describes a child pulling away from real-world relationships as an AI chatbot or companion takes up more of their time and attention. The AI doesn’t have to do anything harmful for this to happen. It only has to be easier, more available or more flattering than the people around them.

  • Choosing to talk with an AI instead of friends, siblings or parents
  • Sharing feelings or problems only with the AI
  • Spending less time on activities that involve other people

Why does increased isolation matter for kids?

Children and teens build social skills through real relationships, including the awkward and difficult parts. An AI that never disagrees, gets tired or needs anything back can make those relationships feel harder by comparison, and a child who is already lonely may lean on it more.

How it shows up in practice

  • A teen who used to text friends after school now spends that time chatting with an AI companion.
  • A child tells an AI about a problem at school but doesn’t mention it to a parent or teacher.

How HeyOtto helps

HeyOtto is general-purpose AI for kids and teens, not a companion. Otto doesn’t present itself as a friend, and it never starts a conversation; it only responds when a child does.

  • Parents can read every chat, all the time, so they can see what their child is bringing to Otto.
  • Group chat puts parents, kids and Otto in one thread.
  • Parents can set Quiet Hours and limit how long each session lasts.

FAQs

Can using AI make a child lonelier?

It can, especially when an AI is designed to feel like a friend. The risk is less about the AI itself and more about what it replaces. Keep an eye on whether your child’s time with people is shrinking.
