AI chatbot
An AI chatbot is a computer program that answers typed or spoken messages in natural, human-sounding language, using artificial intelligence to predict a helpful reply.

What parents should know
AI chatbots are now part of school and home life for many kids and teens. They can be great for questions and practice, but they can sound sure when they are wrong. The safest setup is a chatbot built for kids, with parents able to see what is happening.

What is an AI chatbot?
An AI chatbot is a program you talk to in everyday language. You type or say a question, and it writes back in full sentences, a bit like texting a person. Behind the scenes, an AI model predicts a likely, helpful answer. Chatbots can explain, brainstorm and help with homework, but they can also be wrong.
Most AI chatbots run on a large language model, a kind of generative AI trained on huge amounts of text. When your child sends a message, called a prompt, the model writes a reply one piece at a time. It does not look up a single true answer the way a calculator does. That is why replies can read smoothly and still contain mistakes, known as AI hallucinations.
Why AI chatbots matter for kids and teens
Many general chatbots were built for adults. They may not adjust to a child's maturity, and some are designed to keep users chatting as long as possible. Pediatric groups such as the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry advise parents to talk with kids and teens about what chatbots are, what they are not, and when to bring a question to a trusted adult. A kid-friendly AI chatbot adds age-aware answers and parent visibility.
How it shows up in practice
- A student asks a chatbot to explain fractions with a pizza example, then asks for three practice problems.
- A teen asks a chatbot for a history fact, and the answer includes a date that turns out to be wrong. Checking a second source catches it.

Are AI chatbots safe for kids?
It depends on the chatbot and how it is set up. General chatbots are usually designed for adults and may not adjust to a child's age. Look for a chatbot built for kids and teens, with parent controls, safety alerts and clear privacy rules. Our guide to whether AI chatbots are safe for kids covers what to check before your child starts.
What is the difference between an AI chatbot and a search engine?
A search engine shows links to pages written by people, so your child can see where information comes from. An AI chatbot writes a new answer in its own words. That is faster and easier to read, but the chatbot can blend sources or make mistakes, so kids and teens should check important facts.
Can an AI chatbot replace a teacher or tutor?
No. A chatbot can explain a topic again, give practice questions and help kids get unstuck. It cannot know your child the way a teacher does, and it can be wrong. Kids and teens learn most when they use a chatbot to think, not to copy answers.
