What parents should know
An LLM is the text engine behind many chatbots. It predicts likely words. Fluency is not the same as accuracy, and the model does not know your child. Ask whether you can read the prompt and the reply.

What is an LLM?
A large language model, or LLM, is trained to continue text. Give it a prompt and it produces a reply that fits the patterns in its training. The same idea powers many homework tools, search summaries, and open chat products. The app around the model decides the age rules, the memory, and who can open the transcript.
NIST's generative AI profile treats these systems as producers of content that can be wrong, biased, or unsafe if the product does not constrain them. The model is not a teacher of record and not a clinician. The product has to say what the reply is for.
Why an LLM matters
A smooth paragraph is easy to trust. Students paste it. Parents hear a kind voice and assume a person is behind it. The LLM is software. The account around it is what makes the chat visible.
Two products can use similar models and feel completely different. One stops at a homework step. Another is built to keep a private relationship going. The model does not settle that. The product design does.

Is an LLM the same as Otto?
